I have been trying to put the loss of Karyn into words for the past few days. As many of you know, Karyn was a dear friend to me and also an intern for My BrownBox. It saddens me to see information misconstrued and stories miswritten. If you were to know Karyn Washington then you would know that she had much confidence in her ‪#‎BrownBeauty‬. It was not a facade. The color of her skin is what fueled her mission to “celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combatting colorism and promoting self love!”

Karyn’s #1 cheerleader was her mother who passed away in October 2013. Following her mother’s death, Karyn continued to mourn her loss, while dealing with other obstacles that arised.

It is normal for friends and family to live with regrets, and to blame themselves for not being able to stop horrible things from happening to their loved oned. After hearing the news, the first thing I thought to myself is “I could have prevented this.” …Or could I?

I have made the decision to remember Karyn’s light that has shined so brightly in my life. The same light that has positively impacted many women near and far.

I have made a promise to myself that I will not regret what I could not control. Instead I will continue to carry on Karyn’s legacy as best as I know how and I encourage you to do the same.

If you want to learn more about what Karyn was going through then read her blog:

Explore it. Read her story, through her words. Learn from this incident. Love one another harder and love yourself even harder #BrownBeauty.

Dear Karyn W.
You are inspirational and lovely and wherever you are, I hope you are happy. I did not personally know you but I miss you already and the news of your passing breaks my heart. You are such a beautiful soul and you will never be forgotten.
